What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a pervasive sense of worry or fear that can interfere with daily life. It can be triggered by everyday stressors or occur without an obvious cause. While anxiety is a natural response designed to keep us alert and prepared, chronic anxiety can disrupt daily life and prevent you from being present. There are several types of anxiety disorders, each with its own unique features.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Persistent and excessive worry across multiple domains.

Panic Disorder: Recurrent, unexpected panic attacks and fear of reoccurrence. Can present with or without agoraphobia, or fear of being outside of home.

Social Anxiety Disorder: Intense fear of social situations, in particular, being judged by others. Characterized by avoidance and compensatory safety behaviors.

Specific Phobias: Extreme fear of specific objects or situations, such as heights or flying.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Recurrent, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions) designed to alleviate the intense discomfort.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Anxiety following a traumatic event. Characterized by recurrent unwanted memories and flashbacks, efforts to avoid reminders of the trauma, persistent negative changes in cognition and mood, and alternations in typical emotional and physical reactions and processes.

Trichotillomania: Compulsive hair pulling, completing a cycle of tension, action, and relief.

What is Depression?

Depression is a mood disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a lack of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed. It affects how you feel, think, and handle daily activities. Depression is more than just a fleeting feeling of emptiness; it can significantly impact your quality of life and requires professional attention to manage and overcome. There are several types of depression, each with its own distinct features.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD): Characterized by severe hopelessness, emptiness, irritability, guilt, or worthlessness. Interferes with daily functioning due to fatigue, absence of motivation, insomnia, pain, and cognitive fog.

Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia): A chronic form of depression with long-lasting symptoms that are less severe than MDD, but interfere with overall well-being.

Bipolar Disorder I & II: Involves episodes of depression alternating with periods of mania or elevated mood. Can result in impulsive and destructive behavior, grandiosity, irritability, sleeplessness, and diminished appetite.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Depression that occurs at certain times of the year, usually in the winter months, due to limited access to direct sunlight.

Postpartum Depression: Depression that occurs following childbirth, affecting new mothers and their ability to bond with and care for their infant.

Situational Depression: An adjustment disorder activated by circumstantial factors in the environment or body that persists until the inciting trigger abates.

Loneliness: A non-pathological response to an increasingly isolating culture, exacerbated by relationship ruptures, geographical moves, and a variation in growth trajectory amongst peers.
