Introduction to our new ask a therapist column with Boulder Weekly: "Dear Michele"

Welcome to “Dear Michele”, a new monthly column in Boulder Weekly dedicated to exploring the intricacies of mental health and well-being. I’m Michele Goldberg, a licensed therapist with 15 years of experience in counseling individuals and couples.

This column aims to bring mental health conversations to the forefront, offering insights, advice, and support to our Boulder community. Our goal is to replace shame with curiosity, encouraging both critical thinking and intentional emotional awareness around shared life challenges. We aim to explore a diverse range of topics, fostering empathy and connection—essential pillars of mental health.

Each month, I’ll be answering your questions about relationships, work conflicts, family dynamics, and general personal growth. Whatever the topic, I am here to offer guidance and perspective. It’s important to note that while I’ll offer professional insights, this column is not a substitute for personal therapy or medical advice. Instead, think of it as a starting point for reflection and understanding, potentially inspiring you to seek further support if needed.

To maintain privacy, all questions will be anonymized, and identifying details will be changed. If you have a question you’d like answered, you can submit it via email to [email protected] – or fill out our doc form. Please include your age range and any relevant context, but note that personally identifying information is not strictly protected as confidential through this platform.

In our upcoming columns, we’ll dive into a variety of topics, from managing stress and building resilience to improving communication in relationships and fostering self-compassion. I’m excited to embark on this journey with you, exploring the complexities of our dynamic lives and offering tools to enhance our mental well-being.

Remember, taking care of your mental health is just as important as maintaining your physical health. By opening up these conversations, we’re taking a step towards destigmatizing mental health issues and creating a more supportive, understanding community.

I look forward to hearing from you and addressing your questions in the months to come.

I am lucky to love what I do and feel so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of your life.

While applying for my first internship, the interviewer broached the topic of love's role in therapy. I responded unequivocally: If I cannot love you as my client, then I have no place being your therapist. For me, genuine care transcends boundaries. This belief fuels my resilience; I never experience burnout because each client matters deeply to me. Your life, relationships, struggles, and triumphs—all hold significance in my eyes. No detail is too mundane, no secret too daunting.
